Smith Engineering (GB) Ltd has won a place in an exhibition of the most cutting edge innovations from businesses across the country at the UK’s largest innovation show in November.
The firm is one of 100 companies nationwide to be selected to showcase its innovation to over 2,500 attendees at Innovate 2016 on November 2nd and 3rd in Manchester.
We have designed and manufactured a novel type of underwater turbine to generate electricity from water currents or ocean tides, which could significantly reduce the cost of generating green electricity. Tidal power generation systems have not been as widely deployed to-date as other renewable energy systems, because of higher manufacturing, installation and maintenance costs, sometimes in some of the earth's harshest marine environments.
Rod Smith, Managing Director explains: “We are delighted with the results of underwater tests of an advanced prototype which show that the turbine is highly-efficient. Its design features should make tidal power more affordable and efficient. We look forward to revealing the device at Innovate 2016”.
Innovate UK Chief Executive Ruth McKernan said: “Innovate 2016 will be an excellent opportunity for Smith Engineering to showcase their cutting edge innovation to a national and international audience. I congratulate Smith Engineering on their success in winning a place and look forward to their involvement in our annual flagship show of innovation excellence across the UK.”
Innovate 2016 is the UK’s largest multi-sector innovation event and is organised by Innovate UK and the Department for International Trade. It is set up to create opportunities for export and investment for the UK’s most innovative companies.
